Winter in the Boundary Waters. We pull sleds with our gear across frozen lakes, set up a canvas tent with a wood stove. It’s pretty cool to see familiar wilderness areas in the winter. We are fortunate to enjoy many options for year-round recreation in our region.

Sheila Stone- Author, Tour Guide – www.britainyourwaytours.com

Bio: Sheila Stone -…Since her 50th birthday she has…-

  • Earned her BA at UCLA, going at the same time as her two sons (they didn’t live together and it’s a big campus!);
  • Went to grad school in Leeds, England living in the lovely market town of Skipton, North Yorkshire;
  • Participated in an archaeological dig at Bamburgh Castle in northern England; and had a great time – even though the box she sent ahead with her sleeping bag arrived just as she was leaving!
  • Lived in an Irish hostel for three months, in a room with seven other women … and one bathroom;
  • Volunteered at an English school in Spain, discovering a previously-unknown talent for squirting red wine into her mouth from a bota-bag;
  • Performed stand-up comedy at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival;
  • Spent a summer in Japan interviewing middle-aged women about their lives;
  • Wrote two books: Boomer Bloomer – A guide for women *still* on the wrong side of the glass ceiling and Unmarried With Children – the single parent’s guide to family fun.

Interview with Michele Erdvig author of Ireland Dream Trip and Personal Travel Itinerary Planner at www.irelandyes.com

Join me as we chat IRELAND with guidebook Author Michele Erdvig who has been traveling to Ireland since 1973 and recently released the 26th edition of her Guidebook to Ireland: Ireland Dream Trip.

Guidebook covers things such as planning your trip, driving on the left and distances between places that are realistic to get to in a day. Lodging recommendations are beautifully illustrated with Michele’s own artwork.

Lodgings and restaurants are all places that Michele has visited.

Best time to go to Ireland: April/May and September but go anytime!

Best way to see and photograph Ireland is to RENT your own car or consider hiring a driver if you have a small group.

Can you go to IRELAND alone? YES. Ireland is one of the world’s safer destinations.

Staying at a Bed/Breakfast offers you more than just a cozy bed and gourmet breakfasts! Bed/Breakfast owners can offer suggestions on local places to see, meet other travelers and interact with the Irish!

Airfare is very affordable.

Shannon or Dublin? Although Michele notes that Shannon is a much easier airport than Dublin.

Airfare between LAX and Dublin was spotted for $550.00 the first week of September a bit higher for Summer Travels

  1. April I was so happy to hear you interview Michele.
You both did a great job! Michele is my lovely older sister who has always been a great writer and teacher of all things Irish. Her husband, Barry, is one of the funniest people I know and has made their travels a blast because of the real life fiascos that happen to him. I think she should write a book about traveling with him! For years we would look at her Ireland photos after their larest trip. I finally convinced her to share them with the public because they are simply stunning.
    Good job all around!

Alaska!

Join host April Bielefeldt as she shares some tips for traveling and photographing the SPINE OF ALASKA!

Alaska covers 663,268 square miles- ranked #1 in size of the states yet is number 48 in population- which puts Alaska in 50th place for population density! About half of the population lives within the Metro Area of Anchorage-

When you consider that Texas, Montana and California would all fit in the space of Alaska you might start to grasp its size.

I call my trip to Alaska= Land, Sea and Sky- or the Spine of ALASKA!

All these facts may not make much sense especially if you look at how popular Alaska is for travel-

As a photographer I tend to look at my destinations for the photo quality—my story with Alaska started out much the same- I saw an article about seeing the Northern Lights in September when it would not be as cold .. and the wheels started turning!

Places we will Visit:

Seward:

Situated on the Gulf of Alaska. Seward was named after William Seward a Secretary of State who fought for the purchase of Alaska from Russia.

Seward is the start of the historic Iditarod Trail which originally was created to transport goods from the Port of Seward to the interior of Alaska. On average Seward receives 10-12” of snow each of the winter months. It is a beautiful seaport with access to fresh fish and is popular with nature enthusiasts!

We will take a full day to explore the waters outside Seward, where we may see mountain goats, whales, puffins, and views of Bear Glacier.

Optional: FREE DAY in Seward- visit the Alaska Sea Life-

http://alaskasealife.org/

Also spend time wandering the Seward Harbor where you may see otters.

Unique fine art shops dot the small community and you have a quiet private balcony overlooking the harbor.

Seward also has some fine restaurants serving fresh fish.

Denali National Park: Denali is truly a more remote, more rugged experience. For those like myself who prefer to not be out hiking with the bears. The park offers various shuttle buses-these allow you to see more of the park past the first 15 miles. You can only take a private car the first 15 miles.

We will be spending a full day on one of the buses. A full day increases our odds of seeing the animals like bears, moose and others. Also you will get to experience more of the park. Otherwise your other option would be to sleep in or do some hiking on your own and meet us back at the Visitor Center at end of day.

https://www.nps.gov/dena/planyourvisit/basicinfo.htm

Night Skies- outside Fairbanks:

Our day will flip flop so to speak and we will head out about 9pm to get our cameras set to photograph the night sky-

IF the group is more casual photographers we will get ready to go out for a viewing a tad later-

Activities in Fairbanks may include a trip to University of Alaska Museum of the North- a beautiful place which really showcases the history of Fairbanks, its native peoples and early settlers lives.

Visiting a Reindeer ranch- some activities are weather dependent

Tips for capturing the Northern Lights:

If you don’t have a camera capable of capturing the Northern Lights you may want to consider renting a camera like a DSLR or one of the SONY mirror-less

Tripod is also required since you are going to have the shutter open for a bit

Wide fast lens-

Fast cards – any little bit can slow processing time which can keep you from capturing

Location- get out away from the City lights

Clothing to pack:

Fingerless gloves – check sites like www.Cabelas.com or www.rei.com wool is good but can be itchy – you may want thinsulate.

Base layer- for women or men- www.Cuddlduds.com  or www.rei.com are good options-

UnderArmour is another brand that makes good layering pieces

Over that wool- lightweight wool is an option.

Hiking boots can be good- for ankle support and to keep your feet warm.

Socks- Wool padded hiking socks are really worth it- they cost closer to $20 a pair but you feel the difference on your feet!

https://www.smartwool.com/

Finally a really good coat- you can get some of the Coat Systems like Columbia- some of the new coats have heat

Columbia Omni Heat- check www.Rei.com  or Cabelas.  You can often find some of the discontinued colors on the sale portions of most of these websites.

Also this link will rent you winter clothes which may be a great option if you don’t have a need for them otherwise!

The Price of my Photo Tour includes all ground transportation in Alaska for planned activities, lodging for 7 nights- an extra night can be added on at the beginning or end, all snacks on board the van, all breakfasts, a guided boat tour out of Seward, one tour in Denali National Park and a guided Northern Lights outing, driver and portraits to take home!

2 thoughts on “Interview with Fall Foliage Photographer Jeff Folger”

  1. I found the Jeff Foliage podcast beneficial because he gives recommendations on where to go in New England based on people’s interests and dates. Your podcast is helpful with references to weather forecasts, so photographers can keep track of how the fall colors are evolving for any given area. I appreciate the suggestion about focusing on one place for a photo trip versus trying to cover a large area. I can see how going to numerous places would reduce a person’s photo opportunities, even if they’ll only be in New England, etc. once. I liked Jeff’s idea about staying away from the interstates and trying to travel on two lane roads. It’s noted to buy a good GPS when driving on back roads to get pictures. Jeff also talked about taking pictures early in the day or late in the day to avoid too much sun. He has a good point. I’ve seen the impact of too much sun in some of the photos I’ve taken over the years.

Kancamagus Highway- A Classic Fall Foliage Driving and Photography trip

Join photographer and travel writer and guide April Bielefeldt as she shares one of her favorite Fall October drives, full of photography opportunities or just enjoying for good foliage colors. This road is featured in National Geographic’s Driving Guides to America New England edition- page 44 in most editions.

This is one of my favorite drives- it includes a covered bridge, waterfalls, lots of trees, overlooks and a possibility for reflections and scenics that grace my walls- maybe you will feel the same once you take a day and explore it!

How long- the Scenic Portion= 32 miles

How much time- can drive it probably with a couple of hours but to stop, take the waterfall walk and take some photos allow a good 6 hours.

Due to the trees- light sometimes does not get into this area right away so in the fall I would advise get a good breakfast and then start your drive. Stop at the Ranger station as you turn onto Route 112 for maps or any questions you may have. There are also flush toilets at this location. The rest of the drive to Lincoln there are limited facilities- some toilets are not flush- you may want to have toilet paper and hand sanitizer with you.

No food anywhere along the route- between Conway and Lincoln.

Water-drinks- and things like a roll of toilet paper

There is traffic – buses and big trucks – so be aware of these vehicles – pull off at one of the many gravel areas if you start to stack traffic behind you.

The route follows the Swift river:

Elevation – does hit a high point at 3000feet- sometimes in October you will get snow at this elevation. Wear layers or keep that coat handy.

Best to wear a hiking boot to walk some of the uneven paths – trails to Sabbaday falls.

Lens suggestions- wide angle, zoom for close-ups of leaves, close ups of forest scenics such as mushrooms, bark, or other details. Filters such as a graduated ND to create milky waterfalls. Polarizer to intensify the reds- blue skies- define the clouds.

Working from Conway to Lincoln – highlights listed below:

Covered bridge – parking pass

http://www.travelchannel.com/interests/road-trips/articles/kancamagus-scenic-byway

http://www.kancamagushighway.com/

Tripod – for long exposures= a must for getting a good waterfall photo

Polarizer– define the clouds- intensify the colors like a pair of sunglasses for your lens

Lee Filters- http://leefilters.com/index.php/camera/bigstopper

Big Stopper– 10 stops –slow exposure time to create images that have a timeless quality- slow moving water-waterfalls-passing clouds- even crowds of people

Rain gear– either a plastic bag with a hole for your lens or op-tech makes these or movo – go to Amazon:

New England Itinerary Planning 101:

Today we will discuss how to begin planning your own trip to New England.

There are 6 states in New England- Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts

These states cover about 62,000 square miles vs California which is approx 164,000 square miles

What to consider when planning your trip to New England

April Bielefeldt has been leading tours in New England specifically focusing on Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts during the prime Fall Foliage Fall Colors season each year since 2003.

The internet is full of sites like Tripadvisor.com, Yankee.com, Newengland.com, jeff-foliage.com for input.

How many days are you able to spend in New England- is it a weekend, 7 days or 2 weeks.

Prime time to go is the first couple weeks of October.

Average road speed when you get off the interstates is about 50miles per hour max.

Daylight- sunrise/sunset – use sunrisesunset.com for accurate times. On average sunrise October 1 is about 6:50am and sunset 6:15pm and will vary slightly as the month progresses.

What types of activites do you want to participate in- train rides, boating, any hikes, maple syrup tastings- tours etc.

Make a list of must see or do for all individuals going on the trip so you can plan in hours for historic homes, money or days they are open or closed.

How much driving do you want to do per day?

Transportation – where are you flying into- renting your own car?

What type of budget?

What kinds of lodging? The first few weeks of October in New England is considered high season, there will minimums, or black out dates for one nights. Rooms that may go for under $100/night may increase to double that during “Fall Foliage season”

**Columbus Day weekend is usually a 3 day minimum on bed/breakfast lodgings and sees high occupancy

(Be aware of small towns- weekends may have small colleges with homecomings, events, other visitors etc.)

Interests: Vermont still has 106 covered bridges in 1996 count. Places like Hildene- a Lincoln Historic home- many locations to see and visit.

About 7 million visitors to Vermont in 2015 – important to plan ahead-

Use sites like Tripadvisor.com for lodging suggestions, VRBO for longer rentals, bedandbreakfast.com, hotels.com

Regional magazines to use – Yankee Magazine, DownEast, Vermont Life, New Hampshire, Boston, Connecticut Magazine, Portland Monthly.

Jeff Foliage- jeff-foliage.com

Priority: Dates first, itinerary for getting your lodging reserved, fill in itinerary with must sees = parks, historic homes, etc, map it out and then make sure to leave some time to do nothing or edges – for unexpected finds- or weather delays!

Try not to overbook your days.

Podcast- Wildflowers 101

Join Fine Art Photographer and Travel Guide April Bielefeldt as she shares tips for exploring California Wildflowers.

Growing up in Iowa, after winter ended we took to the woods to seek out the tiny blooming gems- wildflowers- in the woods I learned about jack-in the pulpits, columbines, wild roses, and other small flowers that would appear after the snows had melted. That same excitement of going out after “winter” stayed with me and after viewing carpets of California poppies one spring north of Los Angeles I was hooked to come week after week-seeing the hills change from bright orange, to purples to yellows and finally to a burnt gold color.

Not every year is a super bloom but generally there are places you can discover Wildflowers somewhere in the state!

Join me as I share with you tips-inspiration and tools I use to return with some Fine Art photos to enjoy even after the wildflowers have left.

Spring can begin as early as March .. or even late February depending on conditions!
